How the time flies! Donations are still trickling so I don't have a final tally yet, but I'm still optimistic that we may break the $6,000.00 mark! I have heard back from some of the people who were inspired to take action. Seven other people decided to lose weight, and lost a total of 145 pounds! Most of them did it publicly and raised awareness about hunger issues in the US and around the world, and a couple of them raised money and will be providing nearly 1,000 additional meals!
We also recently got some publicity in "The Advocate," a United Methodist newspaper in New York State, and I'm hopeful that more people might be inspired to continue this work In fact, I've already spoken to a pastor in the Finger Lakes area who's thinking about doing it =)
The Redistribution of Weight
One in Three American Adults is Obese, but 925 Million People Worldwide are going Hungry; Something Needs To Change.
About Me
- Pastor Nate
- Buffalo, New York
- Approximately 100 Million Americans are obese, and I am one of them. Now that I'm married with two young children, I'm starting to take my health more seriously. But while I've been converting steaks and chicken wings into love-handles and a gut, close to a Billion People Worldwide have been going hungry... What if we could do something about both problems?
I've started this blog to chronicle my own weight-loss and efforts to raise money and awareness to battle global hunger. If weight is an issue for you, I hope you'll join me; and if it's not, I hope you'll support me or someone like me as we work to lose weight so others can gain it.

Official Final Weight
I probably shouldn't say "final"- there's so much finality to that... I just came from my doctor's where I got my last official weight for the Redistribution of Weight (for now, at least). When I first started I tried to post a video of my doctor saying how much I weighed- it didn't really work so this time I'm going to try posting a picture of the scale, hopefully you'll be able to read it. Here's the results:
Start Date: Wednesday, February 16th (2011)
Starting Weight: 369 pounds
Finish Date: Wednesday, August 17th (2011)
Final Weight: 287 pounds
Total Change in Six Months: lost 82 pounds!
It'll take a couple weeks to figure out how much money has actually been raised, but even with some people cashing out early I think we may have broken $6,000.00! I'll do a follow-up post with the financial update as soon as I can, and I'll try to do an update on wider impact even sooner :)

Only 4 More Days
I can't believe that there are only 4 more days left! I'm not going to bother with the numbers right now- I'll have an official weight in four days and its going to take some work to figure out what the final total on money raised will be.
My attempt at a cleanse was... not good. I was planning to do it for 2 weeks but I got headaches all the time and less than a week in I started getting lightheaded a lot and almost fainting every time I stood up. I finished one week (without experiencing noticeable benefits) and then was sick for several days as I transitioned back real food- and, just to add insult to injury, I'm pretty sure I actually gained a pound or two throughout the ordeal. I'm planning on continuing to eat healthier beyond these 6 months, but I probably won't ever try doing that again.
Well, be sure to check back on the 17th for the "official final weigh-in" update and I'll post a final "money raised" update as soon as possible!

T-Minus 13 Days...
Wow, I can't believe there are less than two weeks left! Oh, and sorry- I just realized that I didn't post anything last week. The last two weeks haven't been super successful but I'm doing a cleanse thing right now and, if it works, I might have an impressive week next week? Here's where we're at right now:
My Current Weight: 293 pounds
Change Since Last Update: lost 3 pounds
Total Change: lost 76 pounds
My Current Pledges: $82.75 per pound
Amount Raised: $6,289.00 (over 24,000 meals)!!!
I think that if I lose 2 more pounds we'll break the 25,000 meal mark! Well, I guess that might not be entirely accurate- I'll have to figure out how many people are/have cashed out early... then I'll just have to lose some more to make sure that we get there :)
I have an official update too! Janet Garrison from Trinity UMC on Grand Island raised $6 per pound in pledges from her close friends and family and lost 22 pounds in 3 months. That may not sound like a lot when its posted right after a bigger more widespread update but Jan feels better, was able to get out some clothes that hadn't fit in a while, and will provide more than 500 meals to starving people! I think its a beautiful illustration of how one person can very simply (and pretty easily) have a big impact- 500 meals! If you're reading this I hope that might inspire you to do something too...

Official 5 Month Update
I just got home from seeing my doctor and the news was pretty good! Here is the official update:
My Current Weight: 296 pounds
Change Since Last Update: lost 6 pounds
Total Change: lost 73 pounds
My Current Pledges: $82.75 per pound
Amount Raised: $6,040.75 (over 23,000 meals)!!!
So I've officially reached my original goal of 70 lbs., a month early! I gave people the option to cash out early if they want/need to, so from here out calculating the amount raised may be a little complicated as I figure out who will be paying now and who will continue their pledges. The amount raised will get a little bump when I do a more accurate count too- two people made pledges with incentives for hitting my goal and I have one small bonus gift to add in.
The best part is that the impact has spread. In addition to the others mentioned last week, I talked to a woman who collected pledges and lost 20 pounds! I've also heard about several more who were thinking about getting involved, so hopefully I'll have a few more updates in the next couple weeks.

Week 21
My official 5 month weigh-in is one week from today! I don't want to count my pounds before they're shed, but there is an excellent chance I will have met my 6 month goal by then :)
My Current Weight: 302 pounds
Change Since Last Update: lost 4 pounds
Total Change: lost 67 pounds
My Current Pledges: $82.75 per pound
Amount Raised: $5,544.25 (over 21,000 meals)!!!
So I only need to lose 3 pounds in the next 7 days to hit my 70 lb. goal a month early. I'm pretty excited about that. I'm also excited to be able to share a couple updates about other impact: one person who was inspired to get healthy hit his goal of losing 30 pounds in 3 months; another collected pledges from friends and family and has lost 20 pounds (of her target 30) with about a month to go.
I'll try to get a few more updates from others in the next week or so, and look for my official 5 month weight on the 20th!

Week 20 Update
Its hard to believe that its been twenty weeks already! June was a bit of a rough patch but I'm back on track with my weekly posts and still losing weight. Here's where we're at now:
My Current Weight: 306 pounds
Change Since Last Update: lost 1 pound :(
Total Change: lost 63 pounds
My Current Pledges: $82.75 per pound
Amount Raised: over $5,000 (almost 20,000 meals)!!!
So, losing weight at a regular pace is for the birds. After 20 weeks, I'm averaging just over 3 pounds lost per week- which is pretty good, though it would have been better if it weren't for the occasional week where I gained weight. Either way, 1 pound in a week is kind of disappointing. Its an inopportune time too because I just announced (last Sunday, in church) that I expected to reach my original goal (of losing 70 lbs.) a month early, and that people could cash out after my July 20th weigh-in if they need to...
The good news is that I have 12 days til then and only 7 more pounds to lose. As long as I stick to my diet and get a little more exercise I should be alright.
